The Teacher : Swami Nishchalananda

 

Swami Nishchalananda is the Founder and Director of the Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales. He has been a hugely influential figure in the development of Yoga in the UK (and more widely) for decades.

He is the author of a number of books on Yoga from the Bihar School of Yoga which are now considered classics. These include Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (the first edition), Meditations from the Tantras and A Systematic Course in the Ancient Tantric Techniques of Kriya Yoga.

Over the years, many people have been touched by his inspiring yet practical, down to earth teachings.

 

 

The Course

There is One Reality behind every person, every creature and everything. The practices of Yoga and Tantra are specifically designed so that we can realise this Reality underlying our embodied existence.


The teachings and practices on this course will be based on the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra, a text which is believed to have been written about one thousand years ago in the Himalayan region of Kashmir. Though ancient, its teachings are most pertinent to our life in the present era. It encapsulates the timeless teachings of Yoga and Tantra.

The fundamental message of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra is that we can be more aware moment to moment in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. Each moment can be an opening to meditation. This means that instead of being an obstruction, our daily life is an indispensable part of the ongoing process of awakening to the miracle of life. There is no need to disappear into a cave or escape the world. Nothing is rejected, and every situation has the potential to open our eyes to the wonder of existence and the wonder of our own being.

 

 

 

 

Note: The teachings and practices we will study in this course are fully explained in Swamiji’s book ‘Insight into Reality – the Tantric Teachings of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra’ available from Mandala Yoga Ashram.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The text is primarily a manual of meditation practices which can be utilised in daily life to bring about a fundamental transformation in our perception and level of energy.

The Vigyana Bhairava Tantra is not so much concerned with giving us wordy intellectual answers but with giving us the techniques to attain the answers from our own experience. Direct perception removes doubt so that there are no questions. Spiritual life is not about intellectual debate but communion.

Meditation, insight and realisation ultimately require no technique; they are spontaneous – but first of all preparation is needed to access this spontaneity. The practices of the Vigyana Bhairava help to remove blockages to spontaneity; they prepare the ground and create a space inside for the flowering of abundant energy, insight and wisdom. Deeper realisation brings happiness, meaning and quality into our lives.

All of the practices are designed to calm the turbulent mind and to bring it into the present moment, for it is only in the NOW that transformation of perception is possible. It is only the present moment that is pregnant with promise – the promise of identifying with and living in Awareness.


All of the techniques given in the text are non-moralistic and non-religious. Broadly speaking, they aim to create a sense of spaciousness and a meditative state in moment to moment daily situations.

The practice points to the essence of our own Being, the source of all perceptions. The external is not the source of perception; the source is always within us. Every situation can point us back towards our own fundamental Identity. This is the purpose of the teachings and practices of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra.

Tips for Online Yoga!

  • A few minutes before the workshop starts, click on the link you received when you booked.
  • The link might go straight to the workshop OR it might ask you to download Zoom first. If you need to download Zoom, it is very quick & easy.
  • If the sound on your phone, laptop or PC is not so good you can buy bluetooth headphones, or plug in speakers and that will improve your experience of the classes.
  • For the posture work, apart from when we the teacher is demonstrating try to follow the verbal instructions rather then looking at the screen.
  • As the teacher is not present to advise you it is essential that you take responsibility for your own practice and to ensure that you stay within your physical limits.
  • You can decide yourself if you want the camera on or off during the class. Your microphone will be turned off.
  • Prepare a space for doing yoga. Make sure you aren’t disturbed by people, pets or phones during the class.
  • You will need a yoga mat, a blanket for the deep relaxation and maybe a cushion for the meditation.
  • During the meditation and relaxation, it is best if you practise in a semi-dark room.
  • For meditation, be comfortable! You may sit on the floor with cushions etc, or on a chair.
