Pranayama

With Chris Noon
17th January 10 – 4.30pm

Sheffield Yoga School, South Road, Walkley
£50 / £35

Pranayama is a subtle practice. If we try to force the breath, to push and pull it into places it does not want to go we lose its subtlety – we might still be working with breathing but we are no longer practicing Pranayama.

Central to this workshop is becoming more familiar with the space in which we practice Pranayama, a space of awareness and of quiet concentration. It is here we experience the ways in which Pranayama can influence and harmonize the subtle energies of the body, mind and breath / vitality / Prana.

About the workshop

This day of Yoga & Pranayama practice will include :

Breath Awareness

Breath Awareness is the foundation of Pranayama and arguably the foundation of Meditation. The similarities between Pranayama and meditation (and how one enhances the other) will be part of this workshop

Asana

The posture work will be geared towards preparing for Pranayama. There will be asana to help remove tension and to quieten the nervous system as well as practices that develop the capacity and control of the respiratory system.

Pranayama ‘Cleansing Sequence’

This is a sequence of Pranayama techniques as taught by Maarten Vermaase. It is a very nice and very effective sequence that clears, calms and envigorates the body & mind. It promotes the balancing of ida and pingala – calm and energy – that is at the heart of Hatha Yoga.

Pranayama Practices

There will be a range of classical pranayama practcies including Bhastrika, Ujjayi, Sukha Pranayama and Nadi Shodhana. There will be some work with rhythms and ratios and possibly some simple Bandhas.

Suggestions for further practice

Pranayama practice is very rewarding but it needs to be regular and sustained over a period of time. It is all too easy for our pranayama practice to get lost in the busy-ness of life. This workshop will aim to give a few ideas and hopefully some inspiration for home practice over a few months.

Taking Time!

Pranayama is often rushed. It tends to be squeezed in at the end of a Yoga class, or practice, and is rarely given the time needed to savour and experience it.

Pranayama needs time and space to breathe!

In this workshop there will be no rush.
