Breath & Awareness

There’s a reason why breath and breathing are so important in Yoga practice – whenever we are attentive to breath, awareness is present.

Breath is the thread that runs through life from start to finish, it is always here. Returning to breath is a means by which we can return to ourselves.

About the day

Awareness of breath and breathing in our posture work (asana) keeps us present with our practice, it holds our attention. Breathing is also a guide in asana – if our breathing is struggling it tells us that more than likely our body is struggling and that we need to pay attention and respond.

If we work to create a space in our movement & posture work where the breath moves freely the result is a loosening of tension and a greater ease of movement, all with awareness.

Breath and breathing are fundamental to meditation. In our meditation practice the mind wanders, we get distracted, we lose ourselves in thoughts and feelings. The moment we return to breath – in the nostrils, or moving between navel and throat, or the sound / mantra of breath – we are present once again. When awareness is present in meditation we can more easily watch the thoughts and feelings which come and go, to see them for what they are and to begin to realise that they are by no means the whole story.

This day of Yoga practice will include movement & posture work, Pranayama, relaxation and meditation.

Throughout the day we will remind ourselves of the fundamental connection between mind, body, breath and awareness. A connection and one-ness which is at the heart of Yoga.
