Mudra & Meditation Online Course

with Hannah Penn, Thursdays 7.30 – 8.30am, 2nd – 30th November

“Mudras are so valuable because they enhance overall wellbeing and allow you to tap into hidden energy reserves. Absolutely anyone can benefit, from children with learning disabilities to older people with limited movement.” Swami Saradananda
This 5 week course is an opportunity to make space in your life to explore the power of Hasta Mudras (literally ‘hand gestures’ or ‘seals’). There will be a different theme for each session but the central focus of the course will be the use of mudras to enhance the practice of meditation.   Mudras work on all the ‘Koshas’, the five levels of our being as decribed in Yoga. The Hasta Mudras are effective almost instantly which makes them ideal practices to bring moments of peace into our busy lives. Human hands are amazing structures enabling us to touch, feel, express and create. This course gives us time to reflect and appreciate the beauty of our hands and to learn how to utilize the power and energy at our fingertips.

Course Outline

Each session includes some simple movement / asana practice to prepare for a seated meditation practice with Mudra. The themese for each session :
  • Week 1 – Appreciation of hands and practices to develop sensitivity.
  • Week 2 – Mudras and the breath.
  • Week 3 – Mudras and Elements
  • Week 4 – Application – The Mudra Tool Box
  • Week 5 – Mudras for Meditation
Additional notes are provided during the course giving an explanation of how mudras work from a Yogic perspective to influence Prana, as well as reference to a modern understanding of how they work anatomically. Whichever paradigm you find most convincing doesn’t really matter in terms of reaping the benefits of mudra practice and it is the practice and experience of Mudra that is the focus of this course.

If you are new to Yoga and  / or meditation you are welcome to join this course but please contact us before the course starts. You will need to be able to sit comfortably and we would recommend using a chair if that is the most comfortable option for you.

Tutor : Hannah Penn

Hannah has been teaching Yoga and Meditation for over 25 years. She qualified initially with the British Wheel of Yoga and then with the Bihar School of Yoga. The Bihar School of Yoga (also known as Satyananda Yoga) specializes in the teaching and practice of meditation.

Online Meditation

The sessions will be held online via Zoom. Zoom is very straight forward to use and the online platform is a particularly good medium for meditation practice; all you need is to be able to hear the verbal instructions – you won’t be peering at the screen during the classes! Everyone attending is ‘muted’ during the classes and you don’t need to be seen on screen by anyone else.
