‘No Health without Mental Health’ – How Yoga can help.


This will be a day of practice and discussion about anxiety, depression and stress in daily life.

Bijam will give brief accounts of Western, Yogic and Ayurvedic models for understanding mental health problems. The focus of the workshop will be finding ways in which we can empower ourselves using yoga practices such as asana, pranayama, yoga nidra and meditation 

We will also look at practices that may be contra-indicated or need to be modified at times of anxiety or depression.

This will be, of necessity, a very brief outline of a complex subject.


There are a couple of introductory handouts for this workshop. This will include a bibliography of useful sources (books, websites etc) which people may wish to look at prior to and after the day. You can read them by clicking on these links :

Above all I hope to support yoga practitioners, and to demystify some of the jargon associated with mental health issues.


The teacher : Bijam

Bijam (Jenni Connaughton)  is a retired consultant psychiatrist and yoga teacher.

She qualified with Yoga Scotland in 2001 and completed a Satyananda Yoga Integration Course in 2007. She has delivered both day and longer programmes about mental health issues and yoga practices in a variety of settings around the UK including at BWY Congress and for Yoga Scotland.
