Creative Pranayama

Much is made of ‘Asana Flow’, or Vinyasa – the combining of various postures, and / or postural sequences, to create certain outcomes. Traditionally, this process would be a gradual flow towards a key posture. However, the flow also creates a certain ‘energy stream’, a dynamic undercurrent which is more concerned with the body’s subtle energies.
This idea of ‘flow’, of being ‘creative’, has not been explored to any great extent with Pranayama. And yet, as Pranayama is primarily concerned with energy, it lends itself perfectly to these concepts.
In this workshop we will explore this theme from 3 angles :
- Sequential Flow Pranayama :Â an incremental flow towards a peak practice
- Themed Pranayama :Â not always a flow towards a certain outcome, more a combination of pranayamas that work well togther
- Creative Pranayama : similar the Themed but adding something new, ie using a pranayama in a different way to its original intention to create a certain outcome without losing any of its original integrity
This is a new concept on the practice of Pranayama
“If we are to believe the basic philosophy of Yoga, then Prana stands at the crossroads. It is the energetic bridge between the koshas, it is the link between the body and the mind, it is the energy that animates our lives. In short, having a firm grasp of the underlying intentions of the various pranayamas gives the practitioner many and varied ways of exploring and influencing the more subtle aspects of our being – be it physical, emotional or spiritual.
The day will revolve around four practical flowing sessions of Yoga that will focus on Pranayama : two on sequential flow and one each on Themed and Creative.
The theory underpinning each session will be thoroughly explored and hopefully enable you to use that understanding in terms of Pranayama in general.”
This is a new workshop, inspired by a sequence of ‘Creative Pranayamas’ which Philip taught for us at our annual Yoga weekend at Wortley hall in 2018.
