MALAS
"One of the simplest, safest and most systematic meditative practices is called Japa. It is a method that is suitable for everyone without exception."
"In japa, the beads are the milestones and the mala is the road."
-Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
A Mala is a string of 108 beads which is used for the practice of Japa Yoga (Mantra Repetition).
The beads are strung on a cotton thread, each separated by a special knot called a Brahma Granthi.
Sometimes a mala is made with 54 or 27 beads.
The 27 bead mala is called a sumirani mala. It can be worn on the wrist and used at any time throughout the day.
"Those who suffer from nervousness, fear, anxiety and other acute mental manifestations should always keep a small mala of 27 beads with them. Whenever they are free, even if it is just for a few minutes before lunch, after dinner, while talking to someone, waiting for the bus or train, or while watching television, they can repeat the mantra mentally"
-Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
The most common beads for malas are Tulsi, Rudrakasha, Sandalwood and Quartz Crystal.
Rudrakasha Mala
Rudrakasha is the inner seed of a jungle fruit. It is said to be the most powerful mala for japa meditation. It's use influences the blood circulation, strengthens the heart and is recommended for those who have high blood pressure.

"When you practice japa, forget your name, forget your home and forget your environment. Just repeat your mantra, immerse yourself into it and become the mantra itself."
