About the Workshops
Are you a yoga teacher struggling to make sense of anatomy?
Do you wonder how asana really works on the body?
Would you like to learn more about dealing safely and positively with common problems such as ‘a bad back’, sciatica, inflamed joints, ‘dodgy knees’ and so on?
Help is now at hand in the form of Question and Answer sessions with a trained physiotherapist and Yoga teacher.
These sessions have proven so helpful and informative that they have now become a regular event in Sheffield.
The aim of the Workshops
It is the aim of these workshops to provide applied anatomy training, relating specifically to Yoga practice and teaching.
The sessions represent an invaluable opportunity to develop an understanding of the structural anatomy of asana and also to investigate practical solutions to common physical problems which crop up in any yoga class.
The sessions are highly practical. We work on the mat throughout, in order to get a physical as well as an intellectual understand of what is being discussed.
The Tutor
Lesley Dike is an experienced physiotherapist and a BWY Yoga teacher. She is co-tutor of the wonderfully informative ‘Body in Action’ seminars.
Her teaching style is clear, systematic, highly informative and even manages to be entertaining!
Subjects covered:
- Functional anatomy: e.g. Why are we doing this asana in this way? What are its limiting factors? How might we modify a posture to suit individual problems?
- Common injuries and structural problems: how best to deal with them in class and what to avoid.
- The question of different body shapes and sizes and how this may restrict or enable movement.
- Core stability, an essential part of Lesley’s approach to asana.
You ask the Questions!
The subjects covered in each workshop are based on participants’ own questions. Discussion is encouraged and the more enquiring your mind, the more you will get out of it!
From a packed 3 hour session you will take away ideas that you can apply immediately to your own personal practice and later integrate into your teaching.
Typical Questions:
- What can I do for people in my class with ‘dodgy’ knees?
- What are the warning signs of hyper mobility? And how can I help?
- What is the best way to deal with a student with a ‘bad back’?
- Can I help a student with a frozen shoulder?
- Please suggest postures to help with arthritic hips.
